Akshaya Tritiya – Significance and Stories from Sanatan Dharma and Hindu Panchang

Dec 28, 2022 | Featured, Special Festivals

Akshaya Tritiya (अक्षय तृतीया), also known as Akha Teej, is a highly auspicious and sacred day in Sanatan Dharma. Vedic literature says that any act of worship, meditation, Yagya, Hawan or Puja performed on this day brings the Punya (good Karma) that is ‘Akshay’ which means ‘never-ending Punya’.

The Sanskrit word ‘Akshaya’ comprises of for ‘A’ (not) and क्षय for ‘Kshaya’ (erode) which means that which does nor decay, diminish, or erode. The results of activities (Punyam or Papam) performed on this day do not diminish forever. Instead, Shastras say, those multiply.

When is Akshay Tritiya Each Year?

The beauty of Hindu Panchang (also known as the Hindu Calendar) is that it is driven by planetary positions and therefore, each Hindu Panchang month is divided in the Paksha or 15 days known as Shukla Paksha (begins from the New Moon or Amavasya day) and Krishna Paksha (Full Moon or Poornima day). In between those 15 days of each paksha, each day has a Tithi which goes like this:

1. Pratipada
2. Dwitiya
3. Tritiya
4. Chaturthi
5. Panchami
6. Shashti
7. Saptami
8. Ashtami (Half Moon)
9. Navami
10. Dashami
11. Ekadasi
12. Dwadashi
13. Trayodashi
14 Chaturdashi
15. Purnima (Full Moon) or Amavasya (New Moon)

Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third lunar day (Tririya) of Shukla Paksha of Vaishakha Month which usually falls around April-May of English calendar. Vaishakha in Sanskrit also means a churning stick. It is the month to churn out the essence, the substance, the most auspicious or the purest.

So, the Tritiya tithi comes twice each month, once in Krishna Paksha and then once in Shukla Paksha. The question then comes, as to why this particular Tritiya is called Akshaya Tritiya? What is the significance of this Tritia apart from the Puranik stories around it?

Hindu Panchang – Vaishakha’s Shukla Paksha Tritiya is ‘Akshaya Tritiya’ ?

This should have been a common knowledge in the Hindu society. But, today’s Hindus have mostly lost touch with their heritage and therefore, this needs some explaining. So, here is the real reason behind this special day from Hindu Panchang’s calculation perspective.

If we look at the Tithis (from Pratipada, all the way to Poornima or Amawasya) regardless of the month, there are occasions when a particular Tithi doesn’t last a full day and the next Tithi begins before the sunset itself. Many times we notice that a given Tithi extends itself to the next day and thus covering one and half day, or even more. Along the same lines, sometimes it also happens that a Tithi doesn’t happen at all and its  next Tithi arrives (e.g. After Chaturthi, we see Shashti arriving) and so on. This phenomena is more noticeable during Navaratri (simply because most people pay attention during those days) when sometimes Navaratri gets wrapped up in 7 days or 8 days itself.

Tithi gets shortened or gets taken ever by another Tithi in a way that there is no Sunrise happening under that Tithi, the Sanskrit word for that is known as क्षय (‘Kshay’) of that Tithi.  If we look at the history of the Panchang, this Kshaya of Tithi has happened to every single Tithi at some point of time, except Akshaya Tritiya.

From the beginning of time, Akshaya Tritiya (The Tritiya Tithi of Vaishakha month in Hindu Panchang/Calendar) is the only Tithi that has never faced a Kshaya (or loss of Tithi).Hence the name ‘Akshaya Tritiya‘.

Akshya Tritiya is The Only Day To Do Anything Auspicious Without Checking Muhurta

Akshya Tritiya is considered so auspicious day that unlike any other Tithi from the calendar, you can perform all your auspicious activities such as buy properties, buy Gold, starting a new business, performing any Vedic rituals, getting married or anything else without worrying about auspicious/inauspicious Muhurt or timeslots during the day. The entire day is the most auspicious and therefore, there is no negative or inauspicious time on this day.
