Dhatura fruit grows and gives flowers in the rainy season which contains the Hindu calendar month of 'Saawan' from Panchaang.

Saawan is the holy month in which Lord Shiva is specially worshiped. The availability of Dhatura flowers and fruits in this month makes Shiva devotees extremely happy. Both flowers and fruits are offered to Shiva. Though both Dhatura flowers and fruits are toxic, Lord Shiva accepts them because he can tolerate them. As you know He had taken the most toxic poison (विष) named "Halaahal" that came out at the time of the Ocean Churning event. Dhatura fruits which have thorns on them contain numerous toxic seeds. These seeds when consumed even in small quantities may produce symptoms of hallucination. Therefore, one MUST NOT consume these fruits after offering to Lord Shiva. Make sure, you keep it away from children and burry the fruit at a safe place underground after the Puja is done.

Dimension of plants, leaves, and flowers may vary.
