Why You Shouldn’t Burn Incense (Agarbatti) For Puja – Instead use Dhoop

Dec 24, 2022 | Puja Guidance

Agarbatti or incense is a popular item sold across the world for puja/meditation. In Hindu homes, where morning and evening Sandhya (offering to Devatas) is performed, many people use Agarbatti as an important ingredient of the daily ritual. But it’s wrong to use incense during Puja. Do you know why?

Agarbatti or Incense is Made using Bamboo Sticks

You might not know but it’s true that Bamboo Burning is Adharma in Sanatan Dharma. Bamboo called ‘Baans’ or ‘Vaansh’ which comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Vamsh’ which represents family progeny.

Bamboo burning is prohibited in Hindu Dharma as it symbolizes family progeny (“Vansh”) and therefore, burning bamboo is like burning future generations. In other words, burning of bamboo cause ‘Kul Naash’ (destroying good fortune of future generations) for the one who burns bamboo.

Bamboo symbolizes health, wealth and growth. Burning bamboo is also believed to cause Pitri Dosha which brings bad luck to the one who burns bamboo.

This is the reason why Incense should NEVER be used inside your home. Not for puja, not for anything else. Period.

Use Handmade, Organic Dhoop Made of Cow Dung

During Panchopachaar Puja, or Shodashopachaar Puja, the mantra you might have heard or used is:

‘Dhoopam Samarpayaami’

or

‘Dhoopam Aghraapayaami’

Therefore, Sanatan Shastras endorse the use of Dhoop during Puja/Yagya. But nowwhere there is any mention of ‘Agarbatti’ or any mantra that says ‘Agarbatti Samarpayaami’.

Handmade, organic Dhoop is not only in accordance with the Hindu scriptureas, but it is also good for atmosphere and your lungs and a dhoop free of chemicals pleases the Devata you pray.
